December 7th, 500 Word Summary

Sports Talk
Throughout the fall semester Tony D’Angelo, Robert Pandolfino and I all worked on the Sports Talk. As the semester progressed, I learned more and more about how to properly run the show and became aware of all the different aspects in order to run an efficient show. Tony acted as a “father figure” throughout the entire process and gradually let us do more hands on work as the semester continued. The first thing I learned to use was the audio equipment. While I had worked on the Sports Show and audio was involved, I never had to set up the audio. In the beginning, I simply connected XLR’s with microphones and gave sound checks. However, now I set the sound and adjust the levels before starting the show. In addition, other minor things like doing proper research and making sure that certain webpages were uploaded was also a part of my tasks before the start of the show. Also, I would place set up the tapes for recording. We learned that you obviously have to rewind the tapes before recording the show but also to use tapes that are old and can be taped over.
During the show there was a variety of things that Tony taught Robert and myself. For instance, how to continue a conversation and being able to manage time properly were things that we learned over time by doing the show. While doing the show, it is important to know how to keep a conversation flowing and make it seem as though you are just having a debate/conversation without any long pauses or uncertain answers and comments. In addition, it is also important to not drag out a topic. The tape does have limited space and all three of us love to discuss sports.
Tony also helped us with how to edit and share the show using FinalPro and Soundcloud. I learned how to log and capture the show onto the computer from the tape. Simply rewind the tape and go to the log and capture option. For the show, we only needed to capture the audio because there was no video necessary for uploading the show. However, other times I helped Tony use the program, we worked on video as well, such as the recent basketball package. In these instances, b-roll and interviews as well as voiceovers were used to create the package.
When the log and capture was finished, editing started because people interrupting the show, pauses, and parts of the beginning and the end were not necessary. Editing this out was simple and after editing was over we had to upload the audio to Soundcloud. We initially had problems uploading the file onto sites like YouTube because the audio format was not in the right form. However, you simply export the audio file, upload it to Soundcloud and post it to Facebook. The Facebook post is the final version of the podcast and available to view for anyone who has access to the Communication’s page or is Facebook friend with Tony, Robert, or myself.
This was the show I primarily worked on for the semester and I had a lot of fun participating in this show and hope to do so in the future.

December 4th

December 4th- Went to the Broadcast Studio today and worked with Tony on editing the basketball package. I had to leave early for a study group; however, I was there for 2 hours from 3pm-5pm. We worked on logging and capturing the video and audio from the basketball game. Once the video was logged and captured, Tony and I took out certain soundbites from the interviews first and then used b-roll over these soundbites. Finally, Tony was going to put in transitions to get from the different quotes throughout the package, which should be roughly 1:15-1:30 long. I am going back tomorrow to help further edit the package with him.

November 29 and December 3

November 29,
Did another Sports Show with Robert and Tony. This Sports Show was probably the lengthiest show we have done, about 53 minutes. Again me and Robert set up the entire show, from setting up audio to working on the show line up and working the computer to pull up stats and other information. Robert and I spent about 2 hours at the studio in total because Tony was telling us about editing out people who had inadvertently interrupted the show. We also met individuals who were checking out the broadcast studio and had talked to them about broadcast related things.

December 3,
Went to the Mocs basketball game and helped Tony with his package. Tony instructed all of us on things to do to have a successful package, such as using different angles, using the audio mixer and getting the important plays as well as crowd reaction. I stayed for the whole game with Tony, and the game ran for about 1 hour and a half. Tomorrow I am working with Tony on editing the different parts of the game and also I am attending the Sports Show on December 6th.

November 16

Did another Sports Show with Robert and Tony and once again worked on editing. Learned more about how to properly upload the files more efficiently to sound cloud and better techniques for how to broadcast during the show. This time Robert and I set up everything for the show and did everything in preparation as well as clean up afterward. This time it was much more interactive and engaged rather than visualizing how to do things.

November 1st

From on week ago... Worked on the SportsTalk with Tony and Robert. Same as last time, but this time I was there a little bit longer. Prepared for the show by setting up the audio and preparing the script for the show. We did the show, it ran longer than it usually does and there were different people from the communications department who stopped in throughout the show, which also made the show run longer. After the show, Tony again showed us how to log and capture and went into more detail on how to use FinalCut Pro. I had to leave midway through, but I saw the majority of the editing work that was done on the program.

October 18

October 18th- Worked on Sports Show. As usual, set up audio for show; checking volume, fixing a broken xlr's and double checking all audio before start of show. Also, Robert and I wrote the script for the show and did quick fact checking on the computer. Show was scheduled to start at 2 but due to technical difficulties it didn't start till later.

After the taping of the show, Robert and I stayed after to learn how to log and capture, edit the video and upload the video to YouTube  Again, we encountered more difficulties which took over an hour and a half to navigate around. The issues was uploading the correct file, and along with YouTube and iTunes, a variety of other places gave us issues while trying to upload the file. Eventually, Tony figured out the source of the problems and the video was uploaded a few days later.

October 5th

I have done a lot of work over the past 2 weeks. Multiple Sports Talk with Tony and Robert, in addition to having one postponed after 30-40 minutes of trying to work on fixing the internet. This is great practice for setting up before the show starts, learning to transition to new topics and being able to have a friendly, yet knowledgeable debate.
Also, I worked on the Sports Show this week. I learned how to work the audio and learned how to handle if the person speaks too low/too high. In addition, I now know how to work the teleprompter and know how the show operates in almost all facets of the operation.
Finally, I helped Katie Becker on the golf package, along with Merrick Letgucki and Natalie Mark. The first thing we did was shoot on-site shots and interview current golf players and the golf coach. We took our time trying to get perfect shots of the course, the players and the players in action (i.e. practicing on the putting green). As Fall Break nears, I hope to attend a few sports games and gather some film for them.

September 5th- Worked on the Sports Show. I learned how to properly use the audio equipment and observed other important tasks that are essential to run the show. I now know how to operate the audio machine, control the microphone volume levels efficiently, and how to manage people who talk to loud/soft. In addition, I saw how the operation as a whole works: how to get different shots, how to work the teleprompter, and how to run the show as a director.

September 1st, 2012

August 30th- I attended the Florida Southern men's soccer home opening game and learned a variety of different useful tips and techniques on how to efficiently operate the video camera. For example, I learned how and when to zoom, what to focus on during a stoppage of play, and how to take notes of important plays during the games.

The game itself was exciting and the team lost in double overtime against a squad that was nationally ranked. It was a very exciting game, and I was excited to film and watch the game.
